S. MARIA GLORIA MAMANGLU ROSS, RVM
(January 27, 1927 – July 04, 2019)
S. Maria Gloria Mamanglu Ross from Siasi, Sulu is the youngest child of five (5) children (4 girls and 1 boy) of Pedro Ross, a French-Cambodian national, and Isidra Mamanglu, a native of Siasi, Sulu. Her mother was only five months pregnant with her when her father died. Thus, it was only her mother who brought her and her siblings up.
She learned about religion from her mother who was her first teacher. Her foundation was enriched by taking formal catechism class with the I.C.M Sisters as well as with the OMI priests. She would assist them in giving catechism to the people.
On June 17, 1945, a B–24 plane crashed into their house, where her mother died and Gloria suffered from a third degree burn on her left foot and hand. She was confined in the hospital for a month and later stayed with her grandmother for further recuperation. It was in this period at her grandmother’s house when she asked for a miracle to be healed so that she could respond to her longing of catechizing children again. Lo and behold, healing was granted! God, in his mercy and kindness, healed the young Gloria. With her healing, she gained the enthusiasm to teach catechism in their place, inviting children in their neighborhood to gather together for catechism class. She even later bought a cottage to accommodate the children.
Rev. Fr. Bolduc, OMI described the young Gloria as an excellent child, very pious and apostolic. He added, that she was the soul of the catholic life in their far flung district.
She finished her primary education at Jolo Central School and intermediate education at Sulu High School, Intermediate Department. She completed ETC at Christ the King College, San Fernando, La Union before entering religious life. After her first profession, she took up Bachelor of Science in Home Economics at the Immaculate Conception College, Davao City.
She entered the Congregation on July 01, 1949 and made her first profession of vows on May 24, 1952. She took her perpetual profession on August 15, 1957 and celebrated her silver jubilee on May 24, 1977 and golden jubilee on February 02, 2002.
She was assigned to various mission posts of the congregation. She spent sixteen (16) years as a kinder teacher, fourteen (14) years doing catechetical work and eight (8) years in the rural missionary and social work. For the last thirty (30) years, S. Gloria was involved in the healing ministry, seven years in Davao City and twenty-three years at the Mother Ignacia Healing Center in Bagumbong, Caloocan City.
One testimony about S. Maria Gloria described her as quiet, humble and loving in ministering to the sick, particularly those who were terminally ill with cancer and other serious diseases. Most of those who sought her loving assistance and healing gift were poor who had no money to go to hospitals nor buy very expensive medicines.
In another testimony, she was described as open and obedient to God who allowed herself to be used by Him for the physical and psycho-emotional healing of the sick and poor people. She was seen as very prayerful RVM Sister – truly and closely devoted to God, to the Blessed Mother, and to Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo. S. Maria Gloria led countless people to be reconciled with God, with their families, with themselves, and even with their enemies through her gift of healing, her gentleness, her compassion and love, her self-sacrificing and self-effacing nature. Her very peaceful and calming presence, and her faith-filled prayers were very evident in her life.
By the power of Christ and through the love of Mary and the intercession of Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo, S. Maria Gloria instantly healed sick people and those who sought freedom from the slavery of sin. The community of faithful, who regularly visited the Healing Center, was always grateful to God for her, who ministered to them and helped them find their essence as true children of God.
S. Gloria’s connectedness to God is worth emulating. She was always in constant communion with Him and ever sensitive to His loving message of healing as she accomplished her mission. Her love for the healing ministry is indeed remarkable that even if she herself was sick, she would always love to touch and pray for those who asked for God’s healing.
Her strong love for her country, the Philippines, is also noteworthy. She would always pray for reconciliation, for conversion of political leaders, for unity and communion of the rich and poor.
In peaceful countenance and in deep trust, S. Glo surrendered herself to Jesus, the Divine Healer, as she breathed her last on July 04, 2019 at 5:05 in the morning at The Medical City because of acute respiratory failure. She truly lived life to the full for ninety-two (92) years and sixty-seven (67) of which as Religious of the Virgin Mary.
We are ever grateful to you our dear S. Glo, for the holy life you lived and for the tremendous service you did to the Church. Your dynamic participation in the teaching and healing mission of Christ will surely be etched in our hearts, especially to those whom you touched and worked with. Thank you for allowing the good seed that God lovingly sowed in your life and in your heart to grow and flourish in the hearts of those who wished to be with Jesus in the healing ministry through your inspiration. Indeed, many of them have continued your legacy after experiencing God’s healing touch through you.
May Jesus Christ, the Greatest Healer, bring you to the bosom of our loving Father. May the Blessed Virgin Mary and Mother Ignacia welcome you with great love, peace and joy. Farewell, our dear S. Glo. Our love and prayers go with you.
Eternal rest grant unto S. Maria Gloria, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May she rest in peace.
Amen.
